Prior to the T20 World Cup, Babar Azam was selected Pakistan’s white-ball captain.

The right-handed hitter gave up his position as the team’s captain for all forms last year.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) revealed on Sunday that Babar Azam will lead the country’s cricket squad in white-ball matches. The 2024 T20 World Cup is scheduled to start on June 1.

Shan Masood will remain as the team’s red-ball captain, while Azam, 29, will captain the squad in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals.

The PCB announced on X, the previous Twitter, that “Babar Azam has been appointed as white-ball captain.”

Following a meeting with PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi to go over preparations for the T20 World Cup, the present Interior Minister made the decision to give Abar control over the team.

After the 2023 ICC World Cup came to an end, Babar lost his captaincy in both formats. Shan Masood assumed the role of Test captain, while Shaheen Shah Afridi assumed leadership in the shorter format. No one was named captain for the One-Day Internationals.

The team’s lone T20I series under Shaheen’s leadership took place in January 2023 against New Zealand. The left-armer’s leadership qualities were called into question after the Green Shirts lost the five-game series 1-4.

Shortly afterward, Shaheen had another setback during the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season nine. His team, Lahore Qalandars, who had won the league crowns in 2022 and 2023, could only muster one victory in nine games.

Recall that in order to accept T20I captaincy, Azam requested to be appointed the captain in all three formats.

Although Babar Azam has led Pakistan to victory in five international competitions so far (the T20 World Cup in 2021 and 2022, the Asia Cup in 2022 and 2023, and the World Cup in 2023), the Green Shirts have not taken home any ICC or Asia Cup championships.
